What You Should Know

The Dominican Republic offers the unique opportunity of ministering to two countries on one missions trip. This is because civil unrest drives many Haitian families to seek refuge in the remote Dominican villages we work in. While cultures and languages differ, they all share similar acute needs for life's essentials: safe drinking water, medical care, and emotional and spiritual healing. Despite having to survive in extreme poverty, the hearts of these people are strong and courageous, and they are quick to volunteer in helping us aid their communities. Their kind and grateful spirits make our visits a time of both giving AND receiving blessings just by being together with our Caribbean neighbors.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When you go on a Hearts Afire mission trip we work with you to decide what role will be the best fit for you. If you are a physician, one of our co-founders, Dr. Joe or Dr. Vilma, will assist you in plugging your skillset into the medical offerings we will have available on each trip. It is not necessary to be a medical practitioner to join one of our teams. We have several non-medical positions we try to fill on every trip including but not limited to:

  • Children's ministry
  • Prayer team
  • Evangelism
  • Escorting patients between stations
  • Food and supplies distribution
  • Pharmacy hands
  • Other (based on local needs per trip)

We work hard with our in-country partners to assure a safe and healthy stay. All travel and lodging arrangements will be handled for you to assure safe drinking water, food, and travel at all times. When necessary translators will be provided as well.

Team members often express how well they connect with the families we serve and how much they learn from the wonderfully positive locals. Any amount of time spent investing in these people will surely impact their life and yours for years to come.

What You Should Know

The Hearts Afire Milimani Mission Hospital is more than just a medical facility. It reaches hurting people both physically, and spiritually in a very real way. The wonderful people of Eldoret, Kenya have already begun to feel the impact of having this facility in their community because the Carl W. Bell Memorial Outpatient Center opened August 9, 2021. The locals now have access to care that they otherwise would never receive, and they can see the progress continue. The hospital’s inpatient men and women’s care, maternity care, pediatrics and an emergency room were opened in August of 2022.

WHAT TO EXPECT

On this trip we will be doing medical “outreach” clinics in villages nearby the hospital to heighten the awareness of what type of medical care is available to the locals. As always, the safety and health of the team have been, and will continue to be our main priority.

Now that the doors to this “lighthouse on the hill” are opened, we continue to expand our reach of what we’ve begun to offer during these trying times.

Should you feel led to serve with us, please contact us and we can discuss how you can participate.
